Chapter 10

Edward put his phone on speaker as he answered.

“Ah, this is Ollie. I just wanted to let you know that Conor is improving, but slowly. He isn’t going to be allowed visitors today and, when he is allowed visitors, the police get to see him before anyone else.”

“That’s understandable,” Edward said.

“I suspect it’s probably going to be Friday before I can get you in to see him.”

“Keep us informed.”

“I’ve also been looking into Inspector Gregory for you. I haven’t found anything interesting yet, but I’m still digging.”

“There might not be anything to find.”

“If there is, I’ll find it.”

“Thank you for the updates.”

“So, what are you going to do today?”

“We’ll be travelling out to Howth today.”

“Good luck out there. Are you certain you don’t need backup? I don’t have to open my shop today. I could come to Howth with you.”

“Thank you for the kind offer, but I think it’s best if Janet and I visit Howth on our own. We’re meant to be tourists. You’d have a more difficult time explaining why you were in Howth than we will.”

“Okay, well, if you change your mind, just ring me. I can close the shop on a moment’s notice if I’m needed elsewhere.”

“That’s good to know. Thanks for the updates.”

Edward pushed the button to end the conversation. Then he frowned at Janet. “I’m going to have to ring Inspector Gregory and tell him what we’re doing.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because we’re going to go and question everyone who knows Conor, and word of that might get back to the inspector. Actually, though, I’m not going to ring him. I’m going to have Christopher take care of it. Why don’t you get ready to go while I speak to Christopher?”

“I will, if you promise to give Christopher my love.”

Edward chuckled. “I can do that.”

Ten minutes later, the pair left their flat.

“Christopher is going to speak to Inspector Gregory’s supervisor. He’s going to ring me if there are any issues. If we don’t hear from him by the time we get to Howth, we’re free to proceed,” Edward said as they walked to the DART station.

“We never did come up with a plan for speaking to everyone.”

“You said you had an idea for the shops?”

“Oh, I thought we could go into the one where he used to work and tell them that we’d met him there on a previous visit. We don’t have any information on the people who currently work there, so we’ll just have to do our best. Then we could go into the shop where he’s currently working and do something similar with Marco. Those are public places. Anyone could have met Conor at either of them. Finding an excuse to visit his home is a lot more difficult.”

“I’ll work on something for that while we travel.”

The ride from Dublin to Howth followed the coast and provided some lovely scenery for Janet to enjoy. Edward spent most of the journey texting back and forth with someone.

“Is there something wrong?” Janet asked as they reached the Howth station.
